Day 67 of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch relay visited Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park on Monday, January 4, 2010.
A typical sunny and chilly January morning in Northwestern Ontario, certainly did not slow a large crowd of spectators from gathering and lining the route of the relay through the park. Nearly 1,200 area school children arrived on 25 buses as well as family, friends and other Olympic fans to witness this historic event.
Louise Carleton from Thunder Bay carried the Olympic torch along the park’s boardwalk to the bridge above Kakabeka Falls where she passed the Olympic flame to Brad Yeo, also from Thunder Bay. The lighting of Brad’s torch within the park was truly a picture perfect moment with the wintery Kakabeka Falls in the foreground. With cheering school groups singing waves of “Oh Canada”, Brad made a second pass in front of the joyous crowds back towards the park entrance.
Before the Olympic flame left the park, family members and school groups were able to briefly spend some time taking pictures and talking with the torch runners. From Kakabeka Falls, the Olympic flame continues travelling westward towards its Vancouver 2010 Olympic destination.
Hello Ontario Park,
Just to let you know that the first torchbearer is Debra Teelucksingh from Bombardier, who started the torch relay at Kakabeka Fall public school. The 500 metre run ended at the top of the hill at the entrance of Kakabeka provincial park. There Debra lit the torch of Louise, who then proceeded to light the final torch of Brad. The 500 meter run was met with alot of cheers from the community and a beautiful scenic run on the Trans Canada highway. All three torchbearers gathered at the end for the final photo. It was an honour to be part of the most beautiful part of Ontario”s torch relay route. Thank you.
To all the Residents of Kakabeka Falls:
Deb Teelucksingh has shared with many of her colleagues at Bombardier in Toronto, pictures and wonderful stories of the warmth of the residents, the enthusiasm of the children of Kakabeka Falls Public School, and the beauty of the park and Falls. We are happy to have shared the experience of the Olympic Torch Relay with you through Deb.
